1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer. If a mastectomy is required, this can result in a significant cosmetic deformity. Dr. Smith can work in conjunction with your general surgeon or surgical oncologist to perform immediate breast reconstruction, or if indicated, delayed breast reconstruction. The primary goal of breast reconstruction is to reconstruct the breast mound that is lost from removal of the natural breast tissue. The reconstruction of the breast can be performed utilizing: the patient's own tissue, a tissue expander and silicone implant, or a combination of the two methods. The nipple is reconstructed using local flaps. Once the breast mound has been reconstructed the opposite breast can then be corrected, usually lifted, to provide a more symmetrical appearance. Once Dr. Smith has seen you for a consult, performed a thorough examination, and reviewed your medical records and medical history, he will be able to recommend which options are best indicated for you.
